Lynton
Sited on a hill above Lynmouth bay the town of Lynton offers a good range of shops, be it for your groceries or gifts. There is an art and craft market open virtually all year. Good pub food and tea rooms are plentiful. Take a stroll along North Walk from the town to the Valley of the Rocks, apart from the inspiring views across the Bristol Channel, you should encounter our famous feral Goats on the cliff sides.

The valley of the Rocks was formed in the last Ice Age, and features incredible rock formations with names such as Ragged Jack and the Devils Cheesering. Take a ride on the water powered cliff railway to:
Lynmouth
A quaint town with a small harbour where the East and West Lyn rivers flow in to the sea. There is some excellent shopping available for gifts, souvenirs, clothing or simply a locally made ice cream. Good pubs and fine restaurants are sited around the Harbour and riverfront area. There are excellent walks to Watersmeet from Lynmouth, or if you prefer, a challenging putting green.

Exmoor
West Lyn is the perfect base to explore the moor. The Doone Valley, Oare and Robbers Bridge, beauty spots made famous by the novel "Lorna Doone" are a must to visit. Dunkery Beacon is the highest point on Exmoor with spectacular views. Tour the towns and villages in the heart of Exmoor such as Dulverton, Exford and Winsford. Porlock made notorious by its steep hill is a quaint village, and Porlock Weir with its small harbour has several outstanding eateries.

Beaches
The beautiful sandy beaches at Woolacombe and Croyde are approximately 30 minutes drive from West Lyn. They are a mecca for sunbathers and surfers. If you would like somewhere less busy in peak season, then try Saunton Sands. There is a small beach at Lynmouth called Blacklands. It is coarse sand and shingle but good for bathing. There are some good rock pools at low water and are great fun with a net catching shrimps or crabs. |
Pony Trekking
Devon and Exmoor is great riding country. There are several excellent stables nearby, that offer accommpanied riding by the hour, day or week. They cater for all abilities. We can put you in touch with the best stables.
National Trust
The National Trust has a big presence in North Devon. At Watersmeet they have a shop and tea rooms in the former fishing lodge that dates to Victorian times. Try a cream tea in their gardens right by the East Lyn river. Arlington Court is a country house estate set in many acres of parkland, and stables that house the Trust's carriage collection. Various events run throughout the year at this location, including open air concerts and plays in summer. |
